About Ferro Silicon Zirconium

Ferro Silicon Zirconium (FeSiZr), which is sometimes referred to as Zirconium Ferro Silicon or Silicon Zirconium, is an alloy of Ferro Silicon with a usual Zirconium content of 25-40%, but note that Westbrook’s FeSiZr contains 30-35% Zirconium. It is used in steel and cast iron production to improve the mechanical properties of the metal. The addition of Zirconium to Ferro Silicon gives enhanced strength, thermal stability and heightened resistance to oxidation and corrosion.

Ferro Silicon Zirconium can also reduce chill in areas of castings that cool more rapidly.

Key Properties of Ferro Silicon Zirconium

Ferro Silicon Zirconium exhibits excellent stability at high temperatures and acts as a grain refiner. The addition of Zirconium improves the alloy's ability to remove impurities, such as oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen making for quality, clean steel production. The Silicon content helps to improve fluidity and castability of molten metal. Ferro Silicon Zirconium, one of four Silicon Alloys we supply worldwide, is also prized for its ability to improve the mechanical properties of steel, such as strength, hardness and durability.

Uses of Ferro Silicon Zirconium

Ferro Silicon Zirconium is used in steel production to enhance the mechanical properties of the metal, reduce impurities and improve its machinability by refining the grain structure and modifying inclusions.

It is also used as an inoculant and pre-conditioner in ductile iron and in the production of high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steels, which have applications in automotive, oil and gas and construction industries. In the foundry industry, it is used in the production of various metal castings and, in particular, where corrosion resistance, durability and high-temperature stability are desired.

Production of Ferro Silicon Zirconium

The raw materials typically include Zirconium Dioxide (ZrOâ‚‚), Silica (SiOâ‚‚) or Ferro Silicon, Iron and Carbon (coke) along with carefully selected fluxes to optimise the reduction reaction. These raw materials are added to a submerged electric arc furnace or an induction furnace at high temperatures. During the process, coke acts as a reducing agent to remove oxides and once the slag is removed, the molten alloy is allowed to settle.

Once smelted, the molten alloy is cooled, solidified, and then crushed into a granulated or powdered form, depending on its intended use.

Ferro Silicon Zirconium FAQs

Is Ferro Silicon Zirconium suitable for high-temperature applications?

Yes, Ferro Silicon Zirconium is ideal for high-temperature processes due to its strong thermal stability at high temperatures therefore reducing the risk of material degradation of applications under heat stress. It also enhances alloy performance, prevents oxidation and improves durability in demanding environments. For ultra high temperature applications, Ferro Zirconium may be preferred.

How does Ferro Silicon Zirconium compare to other deoxidisers like Ferro Silicon and Ferro Zirconium?

Ferro Silicon Zirconium (FeSiZr) is a more effective deoxidiser than Ferro Silicon (FeSi) as Zirconium enhances the deoxidising strength. However, even though Ferro Zirconium (FeZr) contains higher levels of Zirconium than FeSiZr, FeSiZr is a more effective deoxidiser as the combination of Silicon and Zirconium enhances the effectiveness.

FeZr is a more powerful grain refiner than FeSiZr due to the higher Zirconium content but FeSiZr is more stable than FeZr and offers better inclusion control, fluidity and castability. FeSiZr provides better inclusion control and grain refinement than FeSi and is therefore more versatile for use in various steel grades and alloys.

What are the benefits of using Ferro Silicon Zirconium?

Ferro Silicon Zirconium offers several key benefits, including improved deoxidation efficiency, which enhances the purity of steel and cast iron. It also forms stable compounds with sulphur, nitrogen and carbon. It refines the grain structure and modifies inclusions, leading to better machinability and improved mechanical properties such as increased strength, hardness and corrosion resistance.
