About Low Carbon Ferro Chrome

Low Carbon Ferro Chrome (LcFeCr) is used in producing stainless steel, speciality steels and superalloys. LcFeCr offers enhanced corrosion resistance, improved hardness, and high tensile strength whilst maintaining metal purity. The carbon content allows usage in the production of low carbon and ultra low carbon stainless steels. At Westbrook, we supply high quality specifications of Low Carbon Ferro Chrome to meet the rigorous demands of modern metallurgy.

Production

Low Carbon Ferro Chrome is a Chrome Alloy produced by reducing Chrome Ore with Ferro Silicon Chromium, typically the Chrome contents are minimum 60% with Carbon contents ranging from 0.03% to 0.15%, sometimes higher depending on the origin.

Uses

Low Carbon Ferro Chrome is most commonly used for trimming additions in stainless steel production as well as other specialist applications. It is added by stainless steel producers in the last stages of production to add precise amounts of Chrome without affecting the Carbon levels. An intermediate - Carbon Ferro Chrome is produced by further refining of Charge Chrome by blowing Oxygen and steam through hot molten Charge Chrome to reduce the Silicon and Carbon levels.

Key Properties

Key properties of Low Carbon Ferro Chrome include enhanced corrosion resistance, improved strength, and excellent hardness. It also offers superior weldability and formability, making it suitable for applications where precise control over Carbon levels is crucial. Additionally, Low Carbon Ferro Chrome contributes to the overall durability and longevity of steel products, ensuring high performance in demanding environments.

With current decarbonisation of steel, Low Carbon Ferro Chrome will play an important role in the sustainable development of the steel industry.

FAQs

When would you use Low Carbon Ferro Chrome as opposed to  High Carbon Ferro Chrome?

Low Carbon Ferro Chrome is used to produce high-quality stainless and speciality steels such as low carbon structural steel, chromium  steel or alloy structural steel. High Carbon Ferro Chrome contains typically 6% to 8% Carbon.  This higher Carbon content increases the hardenability of the steel and is used where the Carbon control is less important such as in engineering steels and welding applications.

Why is Low Carbon Ferro Chrome preferred in stainless steel production?

Low Carbon Ferro Chrome is preferred in stainless steel production because its low Carbon content reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding and heat treatment, which can lead to corrosion. This ensures that the stainless steel retains its strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for high-quality, long-lasting products.

Does Low Carbon Ferro Chrome contribute to environmental sustainability?

Yes, it does. Low Carbon Ferro Chrome contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions in the steelmaking process. The low Carbon content minimises the need for further refining, leading to lower energy consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, making it an eco-friendly choice for producing high-quality steel. In addition, Low Carbon Ferro Chrome has a high recycling rate and minimal amounts of waste are generated during its production and use.
