About Ferro Phosphorus

Ferro Phosphorus exists in many allotropic forms. Phosphorus (white) is used by the military for smoke generation as well as being used in commercial rodent poison. Red Phosphorus, which is comparatively harmless, is used in matchsticks. When combined with Lithium Iron, this material is used in the production of rechargeable batteries. Ferro Phosphorus, a combination of Phosphorus with Iron, is used as an ingredient in high-strength low-alloy steel, in intricate cast iron moulds and is also used as a good dehydrating agent that can remove water during alloy formation.

 

Production of Ferro Phosphorus

Ferro Phosphorus is a by-product of the steel manufacturing process; when Pig Iron is being converted, the conversion process will skim Ferro Phosphorus from the top of the slag. This was first done using the basic Bessemer process or the Thomas process.

Key Properties of Ferro Phosphorus

Ferro Phosphorus, as an additive to the production process of ferrous metals, will impart several desirable properties upon the resulting alloy. One of the primary benefits of adding Ferro Phosphorus is that it will act as a drying agent which will remove water content from any nitric acid used during manufacturing. Adding Ferro Phosphorus to an alloy also prevents oxidation and the later rusting of metals. It also improves the fluidity of molten iron but too much can make the alloy more brittle.

By keeping varied amounts of Ferro Phosphorus in the process, the metal can be made more brittle if desired. For example, the use of Phosphorus as an alloying element in powder metallurgy has been around since 1939. Sintered steel alloy with Ferro Phosphorus has improved strength, as compared to unalloyed sintered steel. Recent developments in Ferro Phosphorus powder has allowed sintered steels to have high strengths in combination with good ductility. It is also used in cast iron production where it improves fluidity of the molten metal improving the castability of thinner, more intricate moulds. Ferro Phosphorus is also used as a manufacturing drying agent.

How important is dosage control when adding Ferro Phosphorus to melts?

 

Precise additions of Ferro Phosphorus are important and the useful concentration range is narrow. Too much Ferro Phosphorus can cause the alloy to be brittle and can create grain-boundary segregation, cracking and reduced ductility. Too little Ferro Phosphorus may not impart the desired properties sufficiently.

When is Ferro Phosphorus used in cast iron production?

 

Ferro Phosphorus can be used in cast iron production predominantly to improve fluidity during casting. Phosphorus lowers the melting temperature and contributes to the formation of a low-melting iron phosphide eutectic (“steadite”) which helps the molten iron flow more easily into thin or more intricate moulds. This improved fluidity also reduces the risk of incomplete filling of moulds improving castability. As mentioned above, too much Phosphorus can make cast iron more brittle, so it is more likely to be used in thinner, intricate castings than in engineering cast irons.

Why is Ferro Phosphorus preferred over pure Phosphorus additions?

 

Pure elemental Phosphorus is highly reactive and much more difficult to transport and handle than Ferro Phosphorus. White Phosphorus can ignite spontaneously in air under certain conditions. Red Phosphorus is less reactive than White Phosphorus, but it remains combustible, especially as a fine powder or dust and can ignite when heated at high temperatures forming toxic Phosphorus oxides. By contrast, Ferro Phosphorus is more stable, easier to transport and safer to handle.

As the majority of relevant melts already include Iron and require relatively low amounts of Phosphorus, Ferro Phosphorus is a practical and natural choice for introducing Phosphorus. It is available in a range of sizes, enabling controlled additions and providing a safer, more manageable method for adding Phosphorus to melts.
