About Bismuth

Bismuth is a brittle metal with a silvery white colour when freshly produced. Surface oxidation gives the metal a rosy cast over time.

Key Properties of Bismuth

Metallic Bismuth is used principally in alloys to decrease the melting temperature. It is a useful component of type-metal alloys, which make neat, clean castings and an important ingredient of low-melting alloys (‘fusible alloys’), which have a large variety of applications.  Small concentrations of Bismuth improve the machinability of Aluminium, Steel, Stainless Steels, and other alloys and suppress the separation of Graphite from malleable Cast Iron.

In addition to its use as an alloy in castings and machining, Bismuth is also used in electronics that need to be heat-resistant such as fire alarms, and sprinkler systems and materials with a low melting temperature such as solders.
