SILICON ALLOYS

Silicon Alloys are engineered to enhance the performance and durability of various metal products. Whether used in the manufacturing of steel or Aluminium, Silicon Alloys provide increased strength, corrosion resistance and thermal stability. Silicon Alloys containing Iron are used to deoxidise steel, as an inoculant and in applications requiring higher electrical resistivity and magnetism.

At Westbrook Resources, we are committed to be an industry leader with our range of Silicon Alloys. Learn more about the Silicon Alloys we supply around the world.

Silicon Alloys In Industry

Silicon Alloys play a crucial role in industry due to their remarkable properties and versatility. In the steel industry, Silicon Alloys, particularly Ferro Silicon, are essential for deoxidising steel and enhancing its strength and hardness. They also reduce Chromium Oxides in the melt, therefore improving the recovery of Chrome Metal. They are also pivotal in the production of cast iron, where they improve fluidity and machinability. In the Aluminium industry, Silicon Alloys are used to enhance castability and reduce shrinkage, resulting in high-performance, lightweight components ideal for use in the automotive and aerospace industries.

Use of Ferro Silicon Magnesium is an industry-preferred method to introduce Magnesium into molten cast iron. The effect is to produce spheroidal graphite structures within the metal’s structure to produce nodular iron (otherwise known as ductile iron). This structure imparts several desirable properties such as impact resistance, ductility, elongation and wear resistance enabling it to withstand significant loads and deformation without fracturing.

Silicon Alloys are integral to the electronics sector, where their excellent thermal and electrical conductivity make them indispensable in the manufacturing of semiconductors and solar panels. By providing enhanced performance and durability, Silicon Alloys are essential to modern industrial processes, driving innovation and efficiency across multiple sectors.

FAQs

Why Is Silicon used in alloys?

Silicon is used in alloys to enhance the mechanical and physical properties of base metals. In steel, Silicon acts as a powerful deoxidiser, improving strength, hardness, and resistance to wear and corrosion. These enhancements make Silicon Alloys essential across various industries, from automotive and aerospace to construction and renewable energy.

What packing and sizing options are available for Westbrook’s Silicon Alloys?

Our range of Silicon Alloys can be packed to suit your requirements be it standard 1mt big bags, drums or 25kg bags. We also offer different sizing for each alloy. Visit each product page for further details about our packing and sizing options. Require more information? Contact our expert team who are on hand to assist.

What are inoculants?

Inoculants are materials that are added to molten metal to help form graphite (to reduce shrinkage) and act as a graphite stabilising agent therefore providing a more uniform distribution of graphite particles (to reduce the porosity of the casting). The overall effect of adding an inoculant to a melt controls the process of solidification and avoids the formation of carbides (cementite). Ferro Silicon, Ferro Silicon Magnesium and Ferro Silicon Zirconium are all inoculants.
