About Silico Manganese
Silico Manganese is produced depending on the resources available, either from siliceous Manganese ores or from Manganese rich slags that are a by-product of Ferro Manganese production. It is used in its own right as an additive in the steel industry as a deoxidant or utilised in the production of other Manganese Alloys.
Silico Manganese was first produced in the early 20th Century when Calcium Carbide furnaces were reconverted to produce ferro alloys. The typical chemistry of Silico Manganese is Manganese 65%, Silicon 15%-16%, and Carbon 2% or lower. Silicon reduces the solubility of Carbon in Manganese alloys so Carbon contents are inversely proportional to the Silicon content. Therefore Silico Manganese is also used as an intermediary product for further processing into refined lower Carbon Ferro Manganese grades.
Production of Silico Manganese
Silico Manganese is usually produced by principally combining High Carbon Ferro Manganese slag with Manganese Ore in a high-temperature smelting process within electric submerged arc furnaces. This alloy is typically created by adding raw materials such as quartz and coke and sometimes Silicon/Ferro Silicon remelts resulting in a product with around 60-70% Manganese and 15-19% Silicon content. As leading Silico Manganese suppliers, we ensure consistent quality, making it suitable for a range of iron and steel making applications.
Uses of Silico Manganese
Predominantly used in the steel industry, Silico Manganese plays a vital role in deoxidising and desulphurising steel, therefore reducing impurities and increasing tensile strength. It also improves its hardenability, toughness and durability. This alloy is a cost effective way to add Silicon and Manganese to a steel melt and a cheaper alternative to using High Carbon Ferro Manganese and Ferro Silicon.
In the foundry industry, Silico Manganese can be added to produce cast iron, improving its mechanical properties, tensile strength, hardness and wear resistance. It is also used in the production of ductile iron and in welding electrode manufacturing. Trusted Silico Manganese suppliers like Westbrook Resources offer a continuous supply for industries requiring reliable and consistent material.
Key Properties of Silico Manganese
Silico Manganese offers a unique combination of properties, including excellent deoxidising and desulphurising capabilities, hardness, toughness and superior wear resistance. Its ability to enhance steel's mechanical and chemical properties and cost effectiveness, makes it ideal for steelmaking. Westbrook Resources’ Silico Manganese meets the demands of industries requiring robust and high-quality materials.

Silico Manganese FAQs
Why is Silico Manganese important in the steel industry?
Silico Manganese is commonly used in steel production as a cost effective way to introduce Silicon and Manganese to steel melts. Manganese is essential in steel production, in fact, all steel contains Manganese. The combination of Silicon and Manganese in the alloy enhances steel's mechanical properties, including tensile strength and wear resistance. It also improves steel’s chemical stability by removing impurities such as oxygen and sulphur, resulting in higher-quality steel for applications in construction, automotive and manufacturing industries.
How do I choose reliable Silico Manganese suppliers?
When choosing a Silico Manganese supplier, look for long-standing companies with a reputation for consistent quality, with ISO 9001 accreditation, vast experience in the market and efficient worldwide distribution.
For UK and EU based producers, make sure your supplier is EU REACH or UK REACH registered before placing your order. AEO status is an internationally recognised quality standard demonstrating that the company’s role in the international supply chain is secure and their customs controls are efficient and compliant, and is therefore another indicator of reliability. Westbrook Resources stands out as a trusted Silico Manganese supplier, with full UK and EU REACH compliance and is AEO and ISO 9001 accredited. Westbrook also supply other Manganese Alloys that meet the needs of diverse industrial applications.
How do I choose reliable Silico Manganese suppliers?
The production of Silico Manganese requires high energy consumption and generates slag and can therefore be harmful to the environment. However, the production process also involves the use of High Carbon Ferro Manganese slag so reduces waste and producers are increasingly turning to more sustainable practices, such as the use of energy-efficient furnaces and recycling waste.
Westbrook Resources adopt an ESG policy and aim to minimise our environmental footprint and promote sustainable practices.
