About High Carbon Ferro Manganese

Ferro Manganese was invented in 1860 by Sir Henry Bessemer as a way to add Manganese during steel making with the advantage that a combination of Iron and Manganese Oxide results in a lower melting point for the alloy Ferro Manganese compared to pure Manganese Oxide.

Production

Ferro Manganese is produced by the reduction of Manganese Oxide in blast furnaces or electric furnaces. It is a very flexible process in that the slags can be reprocessed into Ferro Silico Manganese, which in turn can be further refined into Medium and Low Carbon Ferro Manganese.

Standard Ferro Manganese (or High Carbon Ferro Manganese) is a commonly used alloy produced by the reduction of Manganese Ore in the presence of Carbon. Typically, it contains 75% Manganese and 7% Carbon.

Uses

Steelmaking - HCFeMn is a key component of the steelmaking process, it acts as a deoxidiser, desulphuriser and alloying agent.

Foundries - HCFeMn is also used in steel foundries to improve strength and wear resistance.

Welding - When in powder form, HCFeMn is used to add Manganese to welding electrodes and fluxes.

Carbon Steel & Cast Iron - Used in the production of carbon steel as an alloying agent and deoxidiser and in cast iron to increase strength, hardness and wear resistance.

Key Properties

High Carbon Ferro Manganese imparts several key properties that make it important in steel manufacturing. It provides deoxidising and desulphurising capabilities, effectively removing oxygen and sulphur from steel to improve its purity. It also improves the mechanical properties of steel.

The alloy’s high Carbon content also increases the strength of the steel. It also promotes wear resistance, making it more durable and key for producing steel used in demanding industries such as construction & automotive.

FAQs

Is High Carbon Ferro Manganese used in industries other than steelmaking?

Yes, High Carbon Ferro Manganese is used in other industries and applications, such as filters and wire mesh, in reinforced concrete for the construction industry, in gears and axles for the automotive industry, in mining equipment requiring high strength and resistance to abrasion and other heavy machinery manufacturing. As an additive to steel, it is used in many different end-user industries.

What are the key differences of using High Carbon Ferro Manganese compared to using Silico Manganese?

Both High Carbon Ferro Manganese and Silico Manganese are used in the steel industry as deoxidising agents which introduce Manganese into the melt to improve hardness and toughness. High Carbon Ferro Manganese contains higher Manganese and Carbon content than Silico Manganese so produces a harder cast. Silico Manganese has a lower melting point than High Carbon Ferro Manganese, which can reduce energy consumption during production. The Silicon content of Silico Manganese helps it to provide good fluidity, which makes it better suited for more intricate castings.

Ultimately, though, it depends on the final chemistry requirements of the steel or casting being produced which determines which alloy is the most appropriate.

Is there a difference between High Carbon Ferro Manganese and Medium/Low Carbon Ferro Manganese?

Yes, the primary difference lies in the Carbon content. High Carbon Ferro Manganese (HCFeMn) has a Carbon content of 6-7.5%, while Medium Carbon Ferro Manganese (MCFeMn) contains around 1-1.5% Carbon and our Low Carbon Ferro Manganese (LCFeMn) contains less than 0.1% Carbon. Whereas HCFeMn is used to achieve an increased strength or hardness by virtue of the higher Carbon content, LCFeMn is used where low Carbon levels are important for achieving the desired properties, such as in low-Carbon steels.
