About Nitrided Manganese Metal
Nitrided Manganese Metal (MnN) is an alloy of pure Manganese Metal and Nitrogen and is particularly valued in speciality steelmaking.
Manganese Metal improves strength, hardness and the workability of steel and the added Nitrogen further enhances strength and plasticity. The Nitrogen content also helps to refine grains, improving mechanical properties, increasing oxidation resistance and thermal stability.
Westbrook’s Nitrided Manganese Metal has a Nitrogen content of 6-8%.
Production
Nitrided Manganese Metal is produced by taking high purity electrolytic Manganese Metal and exposing it to a Nitrogen-rich environment at high temperatures causing Nitrogen atoms to diffuse into the metal and form Manganese Nitrides.
The material is then cooled (either under Nitrogen or in an inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation), crushed and screened to produce a controlled particle size. It is then mixed with a binder and compressed using a briquetting machine.
Nitrided Ferro Manganese is produced by crushing Low Carbon Ferro Manganese into powder form and exposing it with Nitrogen in a vacuum furnace at 900-1200°C initially for around 4-12 hours. The furnace is then switched off to allow slow cooling of the material in a sealed atmosphere to avoid damage to the structure from rapid cooling and oxidation.
Uses
Nitrided Manganese is used in stainless steels (especially austenitic and duplex grades), high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels and other speciality steels and castings. It is usually added during the secondary metallurgy phase to introduce both Manganese and Nitrogen simultaneously.
It is also a much more efficient way to introduce Nitrogen into a melt rather than via gaseous Nitrogen injection as the typical Nitrogen recovery rate is much higher.
It can also reduce the requirement of more expensive Nickel additions in certain melts.
Key Properties
Adding Nitrided Manganese Metal to a melt improves steel strength, hardness, wear resistance and refines the grain structure.
It provides good dissolution in steelmaking allowing an efficient transfer of both Manganese and Nitrogen. Its brittle nature also allows for easy crushing and sizing.
Nitrogen is also an austenite stabiliser meaning it expands the austenite phase of producing stainless steels (the austenite-promoting effect is actually 20-30 times stronger than that of Nickel making it a cost-effective alternative). Expanding the austenite phase of steel production enables it to maintain its properties at lower temperatures and prevents it from transforming into ferrite.
Nitrided Manganese Metal also has low oxygen content, low levels of impurities such as Phosphorus and Sulphur and a uniform Nitrogen distribution. It also acts as an effective deoxidiser and desulphuriser.

What are the advantages of using Nitrided Manganese Metal instead of pure Nitrogen additions?
When Nitrogen is added to steel, it enhances strength and toughness but also stabilises the austenite phase resulting in improved mechanical properties at lower temperatures. It also forms hard nitrides in steel improving surface hardness and wear resistance. However, too much Nitrogen can reduce ductility, weldability, toughness and formability. Using Nitrided Manganese Metal not only helps to control the Nitrogen recovery to give the right balance, it also adds Manganese to the melt simultaneously improving strength, hardness and wear resistance.
Nitrogen recovery can be around 80-95% (see “what is Nitrogen recovery?”) depending on steel grade v Nitrogen gas recovery rates of around 20-70%.
Nitrided Manganese Metal is also much easier to handle and add to a melt than pure Nitrogen and is a more cost-effective solution.
Why use Nitrided Manganese briquettes rather than granules?
Nitrided Manganese Metals in briquette form is easier to handle than granules and creates less dust, therefore reducing waste and improving working conditions. The briquettes are also larger and more dense than granules and therefore dissolve more gradually in molten steel improving Manganese and Nitrogen recovery. As briquettes have less surface area, they are less susceptible to oxidation before use. In addition, the uniform size of briquettes helps to control additions to melts for more precise dosing.
Granules may be preferred if a more rapid dissolution is required or for small scale operations.
