About Ferro Zirconium
Ferro Zirconium is a strong grain refiner and removes impurities such as Nitrogen, Sulphides & Oxides while aiding Carbide formation in speciality metals. The addition of Zirconium improves impact resistance, yield strength and hardenability (a measure of the capacity of steel to be hardened in depth when quenched from its austenitic temperature).
Uses of Ferro Zirconium
Ferro Zirconium is used to produce Stainless Steels, Special Steels and some Cobalt and Nickel-based superalloys. Ferro Zirconium is particularly valued for grain structure refinement, improvement in mechanical strength and its anticorrosion properties it imparts to such materials. For this reason, these ferro alloys become important in very specific applications, such as in aerospace, energy and chemical processing industries.
Production of Ferro Zirconium
The production of Ferro Zirconium involves the careful alloying of refined Zirconium and Iron, typically achieved through an aluminothermic reduction process or in an electric arc furnace. Is Ferro Zirconium suitable for high-temperature applications?
Yes, Ferro Zirconium is highly suitable for high-temperature applications. It improves the thermal stability and oxidation resistance of alloys, ensuring they maintain their structural integrity and performance under extreme heat. This makes it an excellent choice for demanding environments and where there is exposure to thermal stress such as aerospace, nuclear power and chemical processing.
What role does Ferro Zirconium play in grain refinement?
Ferro Zirconium refines the grain structure of metals and helps the nucleation of new, smaller grains during solidification. This improves the mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility and toughness. It also prevents grain growth at higher temperatures, which enables the material to retain its microstructure and thermal stability.
Is Ferro Zirconium interchangeable with Ferro Silicon Zirconium?
No, Ferro Zirconium is not interchangeable with Ferro Silicon Zirconium and should not be confused with one another. Ferro Silicon Zirconium contains less than half the Zirconium content of Ferro Zirconium and is a weaker alloy. Ferro Silicon Zirconium contains 50-60% Silicon and Ferro Zirconium does not contain any (or very low amounts) so the chemistry is significantly different.
They are both used for deoxidation, desulphurisation and denitrification but Ferro Zirconium is a more powerful grain refiner, has better corrosion resistance and improves thermal stability. Ferro Silicon Zirconium would be preferred if the Silicon content can be tolerated and improved fluidity and castability is desired. Ferro Silicon Zirconium is also a more powerful deoxidiser.
