About Tin

A silvery-coloured metal, Tin is soft enough to be cut with little force and a bar of Tin is so malleable it can be bent by hand with little effort.

Key Properties of Tin

Tin is a soft, malleable, ductile and highly crystalline metal. It is not easily oxidised and resists corrosion because it is protected by an oxide film. Tin resists corrosion from distilled sea and soft tap water, and can be attacked by strong acids, alkalis and acid salts.

Uses

Tin is used for can coating and tin-plated steel containers are widely used for food preservation. Tin alloys are employed in many ways, such as solder for joining pipes or electric circuits, pewter, bell metal, babbit metal and in other chemical uses. The Niobium-Tin alloy is used for superconducting magnets.
