About Ferro Titanium

Titanium derives its name from the Latin word ‘titan’, a reference to the Titans of Greek mythology, who were the first sons of the earth. Just as these ancient beings were known for their strength, titanium exhibits similar properties that make it such a highly coveted metal.

At our bespoke manufacturing facility in Sheffield, England, we produce Ferro Titanium and export to steelworks and foundries across the world. We sell on the spot market or on a formula basis for longer-term contracts. We can also offer consignment stocks.

Production of Ferro Titanium

Titanium scrap is mainly generated in machine shops, forge shops and fabricators. Titanium sponge for Ferro Titanium production is a by-product of Titanium production for Titanium Alloys.

We buy Titanium scrap in the form of sponge, turnings and solids from an extensive network of worldwide suppliers. We employ strict processes to identify and control Titanium scrap. All raw materials are tested before melting to produce a wide range of Ferro Titanium grades. Our expertise has been honed over decades of operation to ensure we meet the desired specifications on each melt.

Titanium scrap being melted

The Titanium scrap is melted with Iron in an induction furnace at temperatures of 1400°C. Our Ferro Titanium is tested at all stages of production and again after sizing to ensure accuracy of testing and the quality of the final product.

Ferro Titanium being crushed

Ingot is crushed to customer required sizing. Both lump material and roller-crushed fines are available.

Ferro Titanium being put in a bag

Crushed FeTi is then packed in big bags and loaded for delivery to customer premises.

Key Properties of Ferro Titanium

Titanium is well known for its high strength-to-weight ratio. It has high strength, low density and excellent corrosion resistance.

Ferro Titanium forms stable compounds with Oxygen, Carbon, Nitrogen and Sulphur at steelmaking temperatures during production. These properties are used by steelmakers as a stabiliser to fix these elements and reduce their harmful effects, and to reduce and refine grain size. It is usually added late in the steelmaking process to avoid re-oxidation of the steel.

Uses & Benefits of Ferro Titanium

The most common use of Ferro Titanium is in steel production but it is increasingly being utilised in modern steel making in the form of cored wire. The steel sheath protects the Ferro Titanium from oxidation, allowing quick and continuous additions, and high recovery of Titanium.

Below are some select benefits of our Ferro Titanium:

  • Refined grain size, improving quality and durability of steel products

  • Enhances corrosion resistance of stainless steel and other alloys

  • Production of high-strength, low alloy steels

  • Enhances strength and performance of stainless steel

  • Lightweight material

Is Titanium recyclable?

Yes, At Westbrook, we recycle Titanium scrap in the form of turnings or solids and use it in our production of Ferro Titanium.

Are there any safety considerations when handling Ferro Titanium?

Ferro Titanium in lump form is not considered hazardous but fine material may present a serious fire and explosion hazard. Local exhaust ventilation is recommended to control exposure. Wear appropriate safety equipment and handle the material in well-ventilated areas to minimise exposure to dust and fumes.

Full detailed material health and data sheets are available to our customers.

What are the different grades of Ferro Titanium?

Ferro Titanium is available in various grades with differing Titanium content and residual elements. Standard Grade Ferro Titanium usually contains around 70% Titanium, less than 5% Aluminium and less than 3% Vanadium. We also produce premium-grade Ferro Titanium with low residuals (e.g. Al<0.5%) or low gas (e.g. N<0.3%).
